Game development against disinformation
Disinformation is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and game development can be a powerful tool to address the problem. The Swedish Psychological Defence Agency (MPF) is proud to support the international initiative Ctrl+Alt+Disinfo: United with Ukraine Game Jam.
MPF supports global initiative
This initiative brings together participants from Ukraine, and 26 other countries including Sweden, with the aim of developing games that enhance media literacy and critical thinking.
The initiative is part of the two-year United with Ukraine games project, arranged by Global Game Jam External link., which seeks to train 2,500 game developers, launch 30 impactful games tackling the topic of disinformation from around the world and reach a public audience of over 70,000.
This is how the competition works
The event takes place in three stages from January to April, with eight finalists from Ukraine being selected in May. A winning game will be selected from each participant country to be promoted within that country and globally as part of the Ctrl+Alt+Disinfo game jam.
International participants now have the opportunity to contribute to the fight against disinformation with their creative ideas and technical skills. Resources and pre-jam programming are also provided to ensure the best possible conditions for participants.
The Swedish Psychological Defence Agency initially plans to contribute with knowledge and mentoring to the participating teams, based on our expertise in countering information influence campaigns.
Games can be a great educational tool, and we are excited to see what creative ideas game developers will come up with. The gaming sphere can also be exploited by foreign actors for information influence purposes, and gamers can be targets for disinformation. By supporting the United With Ukraine Game Jam, we hope to spread awareness about the vulnerabilities in gaming. And we want to contribute with our knowledge to the jammers creating the games that can be a positive force for good in this domain, says Director General Magnus Hjort.
Participate and make a difference
MPF encourages both Swedish and international game developers and creators to take part in this initiative. Together, we can use games to educate and counter disinformation.
