Election influence

Influencing elections and the information environment are hot topics in our society, and indeed elsewhere in the world. On this page you can learn more about how information influence is used in election processes.

Information influence

Information that affects our decisions

In today’s digital environment, different actors attempt to influence how and what we think using information. The purpose may be to influence what we think, and this may resemble ordinary election campaigns. However, the difference lies in the motives and methods used to influence us.

The 2024 US election

The Psychological Defence Agency monitored the US election to learn more with a view to developing Sweden’s psychological defence. In the election, it could be seen that known influence techniques were used, while new techniques were also developed.

Malign information influence in the U.S. elections

Propaganda

Propaganda is messages that, through images, language or symbols, seek to influence the opinions, values or behaviour of a great many recipients.

Source criticism – Who is saying what, and why?

Source criticism is a substantial and significant part of a country’s psychological defence against malign information influence. When we are critical of sources, we evaluate information rather than automatically buying it as the truth.

Freedom of expression – always worth defending

Freedom of expression is a constitutional right in Sweden and an important part of our democracy. Everyone shall be able to express thoughts, ideas and opinions without interference by the state or authorities.
